The Buggles
On September 7, 1979, British music group The Buggles released their debut single “Video Killed the Radio Star”, and the music industry has never been the same. The song describes a singer whose career is cut short by television.
For those of you who do not know, the song is famous because it was the first music video shown on MTV in North America (August 1, 1981) and the millionth video aired on MTV (February 27, 2000).
As mentioned earlier, the song describes a singer whose career is cut short by television. In fact, this is what happened to many music groups during this time. With the debut of MTV, the golden era of music and radio faded to the background. Radios did not disappear, but the music acts that prospered during this time and still today were the ones that were able to adapt. The most successful bands of the 80’s were able to capture their audience not only with their sound, but with their videos and their “look”.
Fast forward to today. The web is today’s MTV. It is no longer optional for a business to have a website, but it is a requirement. The most successful businesses are leveraging their resources by investing into the web by enhancing their web presence and using all the media available to them (YouTube and Facebook included) to capture new market share and promote their brands. Like radio, the traditional promotional outlets will still exist and play a role in a marketing strategy, but for the foreseeable future if your business is not focused on the how the web can help you grow then you may wind up like the singer in the song with a career that is cut short.
