Wolf! Wolf! Hurricane!

There once was a shepherd boy who was bored as he sat on the hillside watching the village sheep. To amuse himself he took a great breath and sang out, “Wolf! Wolf! The Wolf is chasing the sheep!”

This time of year, I always think of this story. Why, you ask?

Every Hurricane Season we remind our clients of the importance of checking their disaster recovery plans. We take the approach that effective disaster recovery focuses primarily on planning and prevention. We emphasize the importance of backups. We highlight the fact that “just” backing up is not enough and the data needs to be validated periodically.

We attempt to discuss with them some of the following questions:

• What would you do if the building your business is located within was
  damaged or destroyed in a disaster?
• Where would you go to continue providing your customers with your business services?
• Are you prepared and do you have the correct resources, databases, contact information and other necessary items to adapt to these changes?

I would like to say that all of our clients listen to us, but that is not the case.

To those clients who choose not to listen, I get the feeling they think Progressive is the shepherd boy. Progressive is trying to fool them. Well, I can assure you this is not the case.

According to a recent NFIB National Small Business Poll, man-made disasters affect 10% of small businesses, whereas natural disasters have impacted more than 30% of all small businesses in the USA. Hurricanes are by far the most destructive force causing power failure, flooding, customer loss, and the closure of many businesses.
