Project X

In 1987 a movie called Project X was released, starring Matthew Broderick and Helen Hunt. In the movie, a young inductee into the military is given the task of looking after some chimpanzees used in the mysterious “Project X”. Getting to know the chimps fairly well, he begins to suspect there is more to the secret project than he is being told. Movie Information

Did you know, in the month of May, Progressive ran its own Project X? And no, it did not include chimps. For the month of May, we did a Tweet A Day. http://twitter.com/ptitweets

Not much of a project you say, well I beg to differ. Here is what we learned:

• Tweeting Is Hard: (1) It is hard to deliver a clear and succinct message in only 140 characters. (2) It is hard to come up with a message that people (at least one person) may find interesting. (3) It is hard to remember to tweet every day (yes, we missed a day or two)

• Most Tweets Are Not Heard: Ok, let me rephrase, most of our tweets were not heard. Now if you are Ashton, Conan or Brittney that is not the case.

• Many Local Twitter Sites Are Inactive: In the process of our project we looked at over 250 local companies that had twitter sites. What we found is that most of these sites were started, but not continued. Tweets were months old. This held true for almost all businesses, even those who were calling themselves experts in this field.

• There is a lot of Tweeting Babble: What is Tweeting babble? In my book, Twitting Babble is telling me what you had for breakfast or recopying every new website link you come across. Everyone’s time is valuable and in our opinion if you are tweeting to improve customer service, it is critical that the tweets count.

Twitter is a tremendous tool, and even though it is hard and many of our tweets were not heard, there is definitely a place for it in our business. The key for us is to grow our followers and work hard to deliver quality content that enhances our client’s business.
