iPad: 1 Million and Counting
Apple’s iPad 3G launch may have been a little quieter than the first wave of Wi-Fi only devices, but it still made its mark. Estimates put sales at 300,000 iPad 3Gs over the weekend. Accordingly, Apple said that it has sold more than 1 million iPads overall.
Apple’s 1 million iPads 28 days after launch is impressive. Most companies struggle to hit the 1 million unit mark with a new product. Apple gets to that target as fast as any company. The company said that iPad users have downloaded 12 million apps from the App Store and 1.5 million e-books from the iBookstore. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said “demand continues to exceed supply” and that developers have created 5,000 iPad-specific apps.
The 1 millionth unit sold after the launch of the iPad 3G + Wi-Fi debut on April 30, and for good reason. Both the original Wi-Fi only and 3G models fill different niches, and fill them well.
At $499, the Wi-Fi model is a powerful and versatile option for people looking into buying a netbook or web-device. Its bright, vibrant screen makes it perfect for places like the kitchen or coffee table, and the wide selection of Apps make it as entertaining as it is practical.
Adding onto that functionality, the iPad 3G (with accompanying data plan) is great for travelers. Now you’ve got an internet connection anywhere AT&T has a 3G signal. Business travelers have had various degrees of success “tethering” their smart phones to their laptops in order to get this same functionality. No more going to coffee-shops or scouring for free Wi-Fi when on the road.
Apple has really delivered a great device, and I’m excited to see competition to it arrive in the coming months. The iPhone preceded the current wave of Android-based phones, and I’m sure Google and Microsoft will do their best to grab market share from the iPad. They’ve got their hands full with this one.
