Google Fools
In a nod to the capital of Kansas, which unofficially changed its name to Google, Kan., for a month in a bid to become a test site for the company’s planned super-fast fiber optic network, Google unofficially changed its name on April Fools Day to Topeka.
Visitors to www.google.com were greeted by the name “Topeka” in Google’s familiar multicolor typeface. Below it was a link to a lengthy blog posting by Google explaining the move.
It got me thinking of a few things… First, the town of Hilton Head Island has also joined the fray, and a very creative website has been set up at www.googleislandsc.com. This would be a terrific thing to “win”, not only for improved internet speed and reliability but as a marketing tool for the Island in general. Hargray and Time Warner may not agree though.
The project would fit with the town’s goal of providing island-wide wireless access; a project Town Council members say would enhance the quality of life on the island. The town began a test drive of its first wireless “hot spot” at Coligny Beach Park about a month ago.
Second, Google has made a habit of these jokes, with ever-more increasing complexity and hilarity. For a full list see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google’s_hoaxes. Some of my personal favorites are Google Animal Translate and Gmail Custom Time. Imagine never missing a deadline again… “I emailed you that proposal yesterday!”
Both ultra-fast internet and all-encompassing wireless access will eventually make it here, whether before or after the rest of the country. And you can bet that we here at Progressive will be well-equipped to help position your company with the latest and greatest technology.
