And The Winner Is ...
I searched Google this morning for the phrase “download Windows 7”, and to my surprise the link at the top of the results page was a sponsored one bought by – you guessed it: Apple!!
It seems that there are two possible scenarios that would explain this result:
First, perhaps Apple and Google are in bed together trying to go up against Microsoft. It seems to me that there are no two companies better suited to take on that challenge. Apple’s struggle is well documented (even in another article in this newsletter), and Google has recently joined the fray by introducing its web browser Chrome and its online suite of MS Office competitors (Google Docs). It would make sense for them to join forces, right?
But that sort of collusion would undermine the base of what has made Google Advertising so successful. Every company out there has an opportunity to show up in those sponsored links, and they can choose which words or phrases they want to be associated with.
Scenario two is that Apple has a Google AdSense account, just like hundreds of thousands of other businesses, and they put a large enough sum into that specific phrase to make the top of the list. It certainly must have been an exorbitant amount to top what Microsoft is shelling out, so that tells me that the clear winner is… Google.
